Tom Hausmann was appointed the CIO of Excelsior College in July 2017. He brings with him more than 23 years of IT management, leadership, and consulting experience, as well as five years of higher education teaching experience. Throughout his career in higher education, Hausmann has promoted effective IT governance through collaborative faculty and IT programs. His responsibilities have included writing strategic plans, establishing effective information technology governance, reviewing disaster recovery procedures, and managing costs through efficient multiyear IT budget planning in alignment with institutional needs. He is particularly adept at increasing efficiency and helping institutions thrive when challenged with limited resources.
He has consulted with multi-campus community colleges, private colleges, and large universities where he has applied his expertise in organizational leadership, strategic planning and budgeting, project management, business process analysis, classroom technology and learning space design, and effective service and support operations. Prior to his current role at Excelsior, Hausmann worked as Interim CIO for Ellucian Technology Management at multiple locations. At his most recent site, he was responsible for deploying several new administrative computing initiatives including waitlisting, degree audit, self-service student planning, launching strategic planning, and IT governance.
While serving as a senior consultant with EduServe International, he delivered significant cost savings for multiple clients, streamlined processes, and guided ERP selection and contract discussions. At Viterbo University, he wrote specifications and managed all projects relating to the audio-visual, network, and 12-room medical/nursing simulation center for Viterbo’s new $15.8 million School of Nursing building which opened in 2011.
While CIO at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, he led the implementation of the college’s first campus-wide ERP solution. His responsibilities included reviewing bids, negotiating costs and contract terms, hiring key personnel, and establishing project timelines. Through a distinctive, cost-saving collaboration with two other colleges, WLC implemented the new ERP solution under budget and on-time in nine months. In concert with the ERP deployment, he led WLC faculty through the transition from their existing learning management system to Jenzabar’s LMS and portal.
Hausmann has co-authored publications and made presentations at EDUCAUSE throughout his career. He holds a BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota, Morris and an MS in Computer Science from Purdue University. Hausmann holds an ITIL 2011 Foundations certification.
